Buddy Werner is an inspiration
Buddy Werner was an internationally renowned alpine ski racer and member of the US Olympic Team in 1956, 1960 and 1964. Buddy was America’s first true world class ski racer. A native of Colorado, Buddy had a breakneck style which caused spectacular spills, but also enabled him to win virtually every championship available during his career. In addition to his racing ability, Buddy Werner was well known for his values, work ethic, enthusiasm and sportsmanship. When Buddy wasn’t ski racing he would gather up the local children and take them to the mountain to teach them about ski racing.
The spirit of Buddy Werner lives on
The Buddy Werner League (BWL) pays tribute to this ski racing legend by providing a recreational race program that strengthens young skiers both mentally and physically. It uses USSA rules as a guideline, and provides an affordable, high-quality ski and race program for kids in grades 2nd – 8th.
This all volunteer organization teaches the lessons Buddy lived. The goal of this program is to make participants better skiers through race training. The focus of the program is skills, etiquette, safety, introduction to race skills and fun. The League encourages young skiers to emulate the values, work ethic, and sportsmanship demonstrated by the late, great Buddy Werner.
The Buddy Werner League embodies all that Arctica believes and we could not be more pleased that the Vail/Beaver Creek Buddy Werner League chose the Arctica Comp Jackets for their junior coaches and 7th and 8th Grade Team Jackets.
Vail/Beaver Creek Buddy Werner League
The Vail/Beaver Creek Buddy Werner Race League is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1968. It is the largest Buddy Werner League in the nation. Each year, 300 participants meet in small groups from December into March with approximately 70 adult volunteer coaches. In season, participants ski with volunteer coaches and others in their age group and ability level for ten days in Beaver Creek. There are 3 races over the course of the season and at the end of the season there is a state final where BWL racers from Sunlight, Powderhorn, and Steamboat compete. This year the State Finals are being held right at Beaver Creek.
Registration for the Vail/Beaver Creek Buddy Werner Race League is Monday, October 16. For more information: http://www.vailbeavercreekbwl.org
